Q.  What if my requested roommate and I no longer want to room together?

A.   If you've been assigned to a hall, contact your hall manager immediately to discuss available options.

If you haven't been assigned to a hall, contact us at:

Q.  What if I am in an academic living option and my roommate is not?

A.  You will be assigned to the academic living option hall unless restricted by the program. Honors College floors require that both residents belong to the college. Lyman Briggs and BROAD Colleges also requires that new students room with other Lyman Briggs majors.

Q.  What if I want to move from my room/hall?

A.  While MSU has a liberal policy regarding moves, we do not make moves based on race, religion, ethnicity or creed.  If you are having trouble transitioning, talking things over with your Mentor from Residence Life or your OCAT ( The Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions ) aide may help.  Moves can be initiated after the first two weeks of any semester, depending on available space, by contacting your housing assistant.

Q.  Where can I find more information about my current room/hall?

A.  The web has a lot of information and we offer tours during the summer Academic Orientation Program (AOP).  Remember, every room is a little bit different in size and every hall has unique features.

Q.  What if I don't have a roommate request?

A.  We assign people together based on academic living-learning options and/or environmental options. We don't use "major," favorite music or sleeping habits!

Q.  How can I get a single room?

A.  Returning students can select single rooms during room sign-up, which begins in February.  Periodically, singles are available if a roommate moves out.  Singles are typically not available for freshmen during their first year.

Q.  Are all rooms the same?

A.  Each hall and the rooms within it are different, although they are similar in size and shape.  It's best to wait until you move in to purchase things like window treatments.

Q.  What happens if we cannot match the student to one of their top three choices?

A.  We make every effort to match students to their hall choice and to satisfy the requirements for academic and environmental options. Some halls are more popular with returning students (like Shaw in the center of campus) and this limits space for Freshmen.

Q.  Why do you have an alcohol-free option for freshmen? Aren't most of them under 21 anyway?

A.  Alcohol-free options require all residents and their guests (even those over 21) to abstain from consuming alcohol on the premises as well as other locations.

Q.  Why do you allow smoking in the student rooms?

A.  Smoking is allowed as a personal choice and while not supported for public health reasons, we do value individual choice.  We work with the Residence Halls Association (RHA) in creating the right balance of smoking and smoke-free rooms in Residence Halls. Over the past three years 1000 smoke-free rooms have been added to the system.

Q.  Do students have to have a dining plan?

A.  All residence hall students are required to have a meal (board) plan.  The exception is Williams Hall, which has kitchenettes on each floor.   Interestingly, over half of the Williams Hall residents purchase dining services from us.
