McDonel HallMcDonel Hall

McDonel Hall provides housing for students that have completed their first year.  Perfect for transfer students and those wanting a quiet, more mature atmosphere. Typically, no freshmen are housed in McDonel.  Students planning to take a semester of Study Abroad programs will find McDonel hall very comfortable due to their experience with international programs and students.  La Casa, a floor for “all Spanish-all the time” was started to foster support in students learning a second language. McDonel has specially equipped study lounges upper-class students will find helpful.  Late night snacks are available next door in Owen using Spartan Cash.

McDonel offers six smoke-free floors, six coed by suite and two quiet floors.

McDonel hall also features the International Language and Culture Residence, which is located on the 4th floor of East McDonel Hall. This opportunity is designed for students who truly wish to immerse themselves in different cultures daily. American students will be encouraged to live with an international student to gain the full benefit of the experience, although single rooms are a possibility. For more information, please check out the International Language and Culture Residence brochure.

McDonel houses the Arabic Language Instruction Flagship Program. U.S. citizens or permanent residents with an interest in sharing this culture or an academic and social level can apply by contacting flagship@msu.edu.

Classrooms, laboratories, and faculty/administrative offices are located within Holmes Hall. Holmes is the largest hall on campus with an occupancy of 1250 residents (although Hubbard likes to brag that they are the tallest). In addition, the Honors College, a Living/Learning experience offering a diverse and lively community for talented students with shared academic and professional goals, has a floor located in Holmes Hall.

All rooms are provided with modular furniture that can be arranged in numerous configurations and designs in order to maximize your space. Our beds are in a raised configuration when you arrive, but you may lower them or modify them to suit your needs. No lofts are allowed in Holmes Hall.

Holmes Hall has barrier free accommodations for residents.  Please contact the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities for further information.

There are coed and non-coed suite floors in the building.  Quiet and non-quiet options are available.

Residents have access to bike rooms, social lounges and "Learning Lounges" on most of the floors. Learning lounges are situated on the floors to encourage further interaction outside of the classroom. These lounges provide residents a location to meet with tutors, faculty and peers. Lounges have classroom-style furniture, white boards, cable TV and wireless internet service.

Residents have the luxury of participating in activities outside of classrooms within Holmes hall; music practice rooms, fitness center, weight room, Sparty's Retail Store, recreation area, sand volleyball court and a basketball half court.

Owen Graduate CenterOwen-Van Hoosen Complex

Owen Graduate Center

Owen is geared toward graduate and professional students and upper-level undergraduates wanting a living environment conducive to study and the privacy of a single room. Unique only to Owen Hall, the weekly housekeeping service, at no additional cost, is a very popular option with the extremely busy grad/professional residents.

Close to the center of campus, Owen Hall offers walking convenience to the East IM the Colleges of Veterinary, Human and Osteopathic Medicine, the Eli Broad College of Business and the MSU College of Law. Residents of Owen returning to school to get their graduate and professional degrees often have families elsewhere and find the lifestyle in Owen extremely convenient. Even those whose families live close enough to commute every day from home, find that with the price of gas, the high demand for study time, access after class hours to others in their same program and the convenience of having a room in Owen is a great benefit during the week, not to mention not having the hassle of commuting 1-2 hours from home each way during the winter months when the weather is so unpredictable.

Parking is available to Owen residents nearby, but if you don’t have a car that’s not a problem, because Owen is located just one block from the MSU CATA transportation center where buses can get you not only all around campus, but to the greater Lansing area.

Housing and Residence Life provide a well-trained staff, experienced in working with the needs of graduate students. Owen is open year-round and is barrier-free for wheelchair users. Contact the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities for further information. Wi-Fi areas are available in the common areas of Owen, and the signal even goes out onto the deck. Owen students have specialized entertainment and informational sessions on everything from televised World Cup Soccer, dining entertainment and socio-political discussions.

Suite-style rooms are typically single-occupancy, with a limited number of double occupancy rooms.

While smoking is not permitted inside residence hall buildings, it is allowed outside as long as it is at least twenty-five feet from building entrances. Smoking is also not permitted on decks, balconies or patios.

Owen’s Unique Dining Services
Owen Hall combines American favorites and International cuisine to meet the needs of a diverse population. The dining room grill is open until 11 pm and is a gathering spot for evening study breaks and a quick cup of java.

Your contract will include a declining balance dining account. You can add more money to your account at any time or charge to your University Account. We also participate with the Spartan Cash plan, further increasing your dining options, wherever you are on campus for meals.

Owen also has a community kitchen available in the hall where residents can prepare their own food dishes.
