Social Responsibility
Environmental Stewardship
A key point in Michigan State University's Boldness By Design initiative, and a major focus in the new Strategic Plan for the Division of Housing & Food Services, Environmental Stewardship is taking center stage on our campus. Following a yearlong study, a set of recommendations was approved by the MSU administration that specifically outlines the steps MSU will take in the next few years to become more environmentally responsible. Click on the links below to view the complete recommendations or the summary (short version). For more information on the MSU Be Spartan Green program, visit www.bespartangreen.msu.edu/.

Concessions Community Service Groups
As many as 700 volunteers from up to forty different community organizations work with the Division of Housing & Food Services Concessions group to staff concessions stands during campus sporting events, as well as events at the Pavilion. The result is a great partnership. Since the program began in the early 1980s, over $7 million has been raised for schools, churches, and other community organizations. The administrative burden is significantly reduced for the University and Concessions by reducing training and scheduling duties. Additionally, this program brings many people to MSU's campus who might not otherwise visit. For more information, visit www.hfs.msu.edu/concessions.

Sparty's
For the 15th year in a row, Sparty's is partnering with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for their spring Shamrock Sale. Last year's sale raised over $6,100, making the grand total over the history of the partnership to well over $40,000.
Sparty's helps out by using Fair Trade Certified coffees and teas. All campus locations now serve only Fair Trade coffees and teas, and they also offer a selection of other Fair Trade products. Fair Trade is a program through which farmers are given a fair price for their crops, farm workers enjoy safe working conditions, and environmental sustainability is a top priority. Pack Up, Pitch In. HELP OUT.
This recycling program has been going on at MSU for many years, but with Environmental Stewardship being a top priority, the Pack Up. Pitch In. program has been expanded. Besides the loft lumber, clothing, shoes, cardboard, paper, and nonperishable foods collected in the past, we have added a few new items. University Housing partners with MSU Surplus, the Office of Recycling & Waste Management, CMID Facilities, MSU Bikes, and a few off-campus groups, including Volunteers of America, American Red Cross, Teen Challenge and Hidden Treasures to recycle all the items above plus bikes, books, corded and battery-operated appliances and electronics, kitchen and household items, carpet, and useable furniture.
Campus Living Services
As part of our continuing commitment to Environmental Stewardship, CMID is including a number of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) credit items in two construction projects — the Holmes Hall Sparty's Superstore, and the restroom renovations in Hubbard Hall. Use of these types of products is becoming the norm as we continue to research existing and new technology for saving energy and reducing our environmental footprint when undertaking new construction or renovation projects.

Help Tackle Hunger
Many people in the Greater Lansing area, some right here on our own campus, are being seriously affected by the downturn in our state's economy. Many families are struggling to put food on their tables, so the Division of Housing & Food Services cosponsored a University-wide food drive in the fall. The Division worked with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to establish collection points in all residence halls, as well as the MSU Union, Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, and the Spartan Village Community Center. During one of the football games, semi-truck trailers collected donations at several locations. For more information, or to donate locally, visit www.msu.edu/~foodbank/ or call the MSU Student Food Bank at (517) 432-5136.
