  Fair is Fair

Fair Trade CertifiedSparty’s Coffeehouses and Cafes, the first M.S.U. retailer to offer Fair Trade certified coffee and espresso, has maintained their campus leadership position in this area by strengthening ties with the Fair Trade organization. All coffeehouses and cafes in campus academic units, serve exclusively Fair Trade Certified coffee, tea and a selection of chocolates.

“We feel very strongly that through partnerships such as those offered by Fair Trade, we can impact the world, one cup of coffee at a time,” notes Coffee Operations Manager Nashwa Khogali-Watson. “The principles that make Fair Trade the right decision – economic, environmental and community stewardship – are ones to which our staff is committed. Additionally, they support the University’s dedication to the ‘Boldness by Design’ principles, which include a stewardship emphasis and reaffirm the University’s commitment to advancing knowledge and transforming lives.”

Fair Trade CoffeeFair Trade is an alternative approach to conventional international trade, featuring a partnership between producers, traders or buyers, and consumers to provide a more equitable and sustainable form of exchange. By providing better trading conditions, lives are literally changed. Fair Trade coffee is certified to meet stringent production standards and to provide fair prices, as well as decent working conditions. Coffee growers, workers and families realize the benefits of a greatly improved economic climate. Nicaraguan farming communities will benefit with the building of bridges and roads, development of health care programs and the construction of schools. Fair Trade CoffeeM.S.U.’s Division of Housing and Food Services, of which Sparty’s is a part, has been a strong supporter of the Fair Trade program for several years. In addition to the coffeehouses and cafes, Fair Trade Certified products are available as the signature coffee blend in all University residence halls, at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center and at the MSU Union.
